A systematic approach to creating digital and physical artifacts with generative AI

About the summer school

This summer school moves past ad-hoc prompting toward a disciplined practice for building with generative AI. Over four days in Ruhpolding, participants will learn to specify, generate, and refine both digital and physical artifacts — from interactive websites and 3D environments for VR and AR to laser-cut objects, 3D prints, and custom furniture. Lectures introduce the underlying concepts; hands-on tutorials and a connecting project turn ideas into working systems. The programme is aimed at students and researchers who want to build with GenAI deliberately, combining clear specifications, iterative development, and fabrication across screens, worlds, and materials.

Courses and tutorials

The programme is a mix of short lectures, hands-on tutorials, and a connecting project worked on throughout the week. Broadly, it covers three strands:

Programming with GenAI

Vibe coding basics — what works and what does not. Specification-based programming: how to write a spec that a model can build from. Working with existing code bases (brown-field) versus green-field projects. Hands-on sessions use tools such as Claude Code.

3D for VR and AR

Creating 3D assets, behaviour, and interactions with generative AI. Building virtual reality scenes and augmented reality experiences anchored in the real world. Practical sessions with Unity on provided hardware.

Physical fabrication

Generating technical specifications for real-world objects: laser-cut boxes with assembly manuals, 3D-printed parts, and personalised furniture. Parametric modelling with OpenSCAD driven by GenAI. A connecting project takes a piece from web page to doll-house prototype to full-scale fabrication.

Location: Campus Chiemgau, Ruhpolding

The summer school takes place at Campus Chiemgau in Ruhpolding, a satellite campus of Hochschule Rosenheim (TH Rosenheim) in the Chiemgau Alps of south-eastern Bavaria — about 90 minutes by train from Munich and well known as a centre for biathlon and alpine sport.

Accommodation

We are currently arranging a list of recommended hotels and guesthouses in Ruhpolding and will share it with registered participants as soon as bookings open.

Several participants stay at Held’s Vitalhotel or directly at Campus Chiemgau in Ruhpolding.

Fees

The summer school is free of charge. Participants are expected to cover their own travel, accommodation, and food.

Travel information

By train

Ruhpolding is easy to reach by regional train. From Munich, take the regional express towards Salzburg and change in Traunstein to the local train to Ruhpolding. The typical connection is:

The journey takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. The Campus Chiemgau building is about 10 minutes on foot from Ruhpolding railway station.

Participants are advised to check their connection shortly before travelling using the DB Navigator or the BRB website, as regional timetables and platform information may change.

For participants already using a Deutschland-Ticket, the route is usually covered because it uses regional trains. For groups or single-day travel within Bavaria, the Bayern-Ticket may also be an option.

By car

Ruhpolding can be reached via the A8 motorway between Munich and Salzburg. Leave the motorway at the Traunstein/Siegsdorf exit and continue via the B306 and St2098 towards Ruhpolding.

Guest parking is available in front of the building. Please note that parking capacity may be limited; we encourage participants to use public transport or share rides where possible.

From Salzburg

Ruhpolding is also reachable from Salzburg by train, usually with a change via Traunstein. This can be a convenient option for international participants arriving via Salzburg Airport.

Local mobility

Ruhpolding is a small town and most local distances can be covered on foot. Hotels and guesthouses near the centre or the railway station are generally convenient for reaching the campus.
